Protect yourself against automobile break-ins

Defend yourself against an alarming number of car break-ins at area parks and trailheads.

This summer the robbers appear to be focusing on our parks - with thieves smashing windows to get into vehicles. This is not a new crime, parks and trailheads are notorious places for car break-ins.

Bellingham police say thieves are focusing on wallets, purses and cell phones, often left under car seats or in glove compartments. Police call this "a crime of opportunity."  So take away that opportunity by leaving nothing of value in your vehicles.

Take these precautions:

  • Find another way to get to the park, such as riding a bike or taking a bus
  • Park your car in a high-traffic area
  • Leave all valuables at home
  • Carry any valuables you do need...with you
  • Call the police if you need to make a report or see anything suspicious

Remember it is better to be safe than sorry
