2009-October 12th *KendallWatch Meeting Report
Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. with 29 people present.
Veronica introduced the Core Group of KendallWatch and welcomed new Secretary Cathy Dix.
The minutes from the September 14th meeting were read by Joyce. The treasurer's report was read by Veronica.
The following announcements were given:
- The No-Shooting Zone was passed by Council on September 29th, 2009.
- The KendallWatch Litter Patrol held on Saturday, September 26th, 2009. There were 12 volunteers who picked up 40 bags of garbage, metal and other various objects. A show of hands was requested of those who volunteered.
- Wendy Morrison mentioned the Harvest Festival for October 31st, 2009 at the Kendall Elemetary School Gym. 100% of the money raised will go to the local Food Bank. A sign up sheet was made available for those wishing to volunteer.
- Joyce announced that any CERT members attending our meeting volunteer with traffic control for the Flu Inculation Centers and to sign up if interested. Walter Vickers is the leader of our local CERT team.
Joyce welcomed Linda Dorcett of Envision Consulting who spoke of the need for High speed broadband internet and cell phone service with the intention of getting access in this area. Tourism is suffering because people don't want to be in an area not connected to reliable cell phone service. The mandate for students is that they must have internet connections in order to do their homework at home. The estimated time for hanging fiber optic cable is 18 months from now.
Veronica welcomed Stacy Rice of the Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross who opened the topic "What to do in case of Emergency". Miss Rice who is the Director of Emergency Services said, "3 people are on call from Whatcom County and 3 others from Skagit County". The American Red Cross helps with family emergencies and work hand in hand with the community.Sign-up sheets were made available for Health and Safety Classes which resulted in 13 people signing up for the one day "free" course in November. The starting date for the course will be posted to the KendallWatch website once the applications and background checks are completed.
Veronica welcomed Resident Deputy Karb who opened the topic "Criminal Activity and Crime Prevention." Deputy Karb announced that two deputy positions are open but there is a freeze on hiring for that position at the moment.
- Deputy Karb read the crime statistics covering January 1st to July 31st, 2008...there were *17,500 calls for service with the same period covering 2009 being *16,000 calls for service ... criminal activity is down.
- There is an increase in verbal and bodily assaults.
- 2008 - 4 armed robberies - 2009 - 14 armed robberies.
- Fraud (bogus cheques) 2008 (60) ... 2009 (61)
- Suicides and domestic assaults are down from last year.
- Vehicle thefts are down 20%
A guestion and answer period followed.
The monthly drawing ticket was drawn by Cathy with the winner Hermod Bakke taking a gift home.
The next meeting is scheduled for November 9th, 2009.
