2010 - March 8th *KendallWatch Meeting Report

Minutes

The meeting was brought to order at 7:11 P.M. with 24 people present.

The Mission Statement and minutes from the last meeting were read and the Treasurer's report given.

Deputy Karb is unable to attend as he was called to duty.

Walt Vickers talked about information available on the CERT website.  There is helpful information on sandbagging as well as other useful topics that are available to everyone, not just CERT trained persons.

Veronica mentioned the Red Cross "Save a Life Course" with is set for Mar 10th from 9am - 4pm in Bellingham.  You will receive a certificate upon completion.

Veronica is trying to get a representative from the "We Snip" program to speak at the next KendallWatch meeting. "We Snip" is a neutering and spay program for cats and dogs.

Norma Otto announced that the "No Shooting" signs would be going up in the area soon. She also announced that the next Litter Patrol would be on April 17th.

Norma has been approached by some people who are willing to take on the Blight Properties issue.  She is looking for people who would be willing to or have pictures of these properties and would like know if anyone is seeing rats in the area -- if so, where?

Walt Vickers spoke about the May 1st National Incident Management System class being held at the Deming Library.  It is a 4 hour class talking about correlating emergency responders, CERT, and other groups during times of national emergency or natural disaster.

Veronica asked for a show of hands of people who might be interested in another meeting about composting.

Pat Beasley said that she had spoke to Stacy Rice regarding Red Cross sheltering course certificates for those who took the course.  Stacy will be getting in touch with those who attended by email in regards to their certificate.  There is interest in having Stacy back for another meeting.

Veronica is trying to find someone who would be willing to speak about teens and prescription drug abuse.

Cathy was asked when they might have the Maple Falls food bank up and running. Cathy stated that they had on only recently had their first meetings. They are working on getting a cooler and just in the preliminary stages.

Two blight properties, one on Ivy Court and one on Cherry have recently been bought.  The Ivy Court property has been completely cleaned up and the Cherry property is in process of being cleaned.  Several properties in the area have been bought at auction.

The gravel pit on Mt. Baker Hwy just outside of Kendall charges $10 for a truck load of "chippable" material.  People are encouraged to clean up their properties of brush and debris because of the high fire dangers we face in this area.

The fire marshall has a program called "Fire Wise" which may be a source for a possible speaker at one of our meetings.

Joyce brought up the affect the Drug Task Force signs have had on drug activity in the area after speaking with a former dealer.  It was stated that after the signs went up people were more confident in calling in with information which severely curtailed drug activity in this area.

Veronica spoke with Linda Dorsett recently concerning cell towers for this area. There is no further update

Joyce mentioned the upcoming 6th Annual Youth Bike Rodeo, the need for volunteers and donations of prizes and bike helmets.

Norm conducted the raffle. The raffle prize was won by Sally and $7.50 went into the fund.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 P.M.
