2010 - May 18th *East Whatcom Regional Resource Center

The East Whatcom Regional Resource Center to be located in the Kendall area on Kendall Road is moving forward.

With the recent finalization of a second land donation from Marble Falls LLC and Tin Rock Development, and brings their total gift close to 10 acres. The additional donation of almost 3 acres will mean that the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center and the Columbia Valley community will have  future play fields and basketball courts. Whatcom County will also save about 100 - thousand dollars in construction costs from the separate gift of a sanitary sewer easement.

The resource center will be operated by the Opportunity Council and will provide early childhood education and family support through a Head Start Program. A food bank, community rooms and a Whatcom County Sheriffs Office station will also be included.

The bid for construction will go out in mid June with award of the construction contract to take place by the end of July, construction will start in late October or early November. Community Development Block Grant funds, state money and EDI program funding are being used for the construction, the total cost  will be just over 3-million dollars.

The building will be LEED Designed and Certified LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
The East Whatcom Regional Resource Center has been in the planning and funding stages since 2005. Stewart and King Architects are designing the facility.
