- The Whatcom County Sheriff's Office invites you to become a "Citizen on Patrol". Citizen On Patrol is a nationally recognized crime prevention program. It consists of highly trained volunteers who assist the Sheriff's Office by being the "Eyes and Ears" of the community. Citizens On Patrol are not deputies, do not take enforcement action, carry weapons or make arrests. They are a valued resource that ensures the safety and security of Whatcom County citizens and its visitors through volunteering. - The Whatcom Humane Society(WHS) was founded in 1902. It is the oldest non-profit animal welfare organization in Whatcom County. WHS is an open-admission shelter. No animals are turned away regardless of age, medical condition or temperament. WHS provides care and shelter for approximately 3,200 animals each year. Services include: Adoptions, Lost & Found, Community Outreach and Humane Education. The Whatcom Humane Society provides animal control and rescue services for the cities of Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Sumas, Everson and the Nooksack Indian Reservation. WHS investigates cases of animal neglect and cruelty and provides spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, de-worming and microchip identification PRIOR to adoption. WHS provides short-term pet safekeeping for victims of domestic violence. WHS operates a pet food bank, providing pet food to low income residents in need.
